So the touch strip seems like a compromise zone between the two.

Even with a surface, I find myself finding a "real" keyboard and pointer when I start doing "real work". The arm motion would completely wear you out.

After a couple of years designing full sized touch screen interfaces, I came to realize that would be a bad idea. I remember I used to think that a MacBook with a touch screen would be cool. We have two forms of computers right now: keyboard centric or touch based. But I think the reconfigurable strip is kind of intriguing. Judging by scanning of the comments, I'm going to be a bit out of step with others.

I'm not sure who this touch strip is supposed to be marketed to in a pro branded laptop. Still not sure if it overlaps enough with the MacBook to be an alternative. They do have plenty of screen space on the new Blade Pro though, which is a total beast. The biggest problem would be they don't have anything competing in the 15" space, specially with Apple's 16:10 screens which are better for working than 16:9. Between a MacBook Pro 13 without function keys and a Razer Blade, I take the Blade easily (hell I would probably take it even with the keys). People use MacBooks because they have the Unix stuff in there, but MS just fixed that by putting bash and all that in Windows, or Razer can just officially support some Linux distro in their laptops. Apparently they got an influx of unexpected customers for their old Blade Pro when Apple retired the 17 inch Macbook Pro, so there's some history.

Someone at Razer right now better be working on how to market the shit out of their machines towards developers (which a lot of them are gamers anyway). Yes, even with the caveat of "but you can add an external keyboard".

It's just unworkable to have a computer without function keys for professional software development. If they do the same thing for the MacBook Pro 15 there goes all the developer community with it, and that's gotta be a big percentage of Apple customers from my admittedly empirical experience. They removed the function keys and put a strip that changed what was displayed on it, much like what Apple is trying to do here.

The Thinkpads tried this before with the adaptive keyboard. Or, if they really hate power buttons, why not make it one of those Taptic faux buttons like those on the iPhone 7?Īm I the only one who thinks being able to touch a button, especially ones that have been standard on keyboards for decades, is always a better solution to replacing it with weird touchscreen solutions? Am I just a luddite?

If they wanted the AppleID so badly, why don't they integrate it physically into the power button or something? I mean, it's not like they don't know how to do that. I don't know why they'd get rid of a row of perfectly good, tactile keys and replace it with this toolbar thingamabob.
